Seven Habits for your Sleep Habitat

The most important thing you can do for yourself today is get a good night’s rest! Sleep correlates with so many things, including, but not limited to productivity, focus, mood, and stress levels. In order to get the most out of each day mentally and physically, we must rest and recharge our bodies and minds at night.

Since we’re in the business of making sleep products, we thought we would craft up a list of tips designed to help you fall asleep, stay asleep, and wake up rested!

Drink herbal tea

Drinking decaf tea with chamomile, peppermint, spearmint, or valerian root (to name a few), can have a calming effect on your mind and body. The various combinations of herbs, flowers, and plants are designed to help you wind down from the day and get you in sleep mode. While this isn’t scientifically proven, we think it does the trick! Read a book

Reading a book before bed can help to relax your mind (and in our case, make you so sleepy that your eyes can no longer stay open). There are also other surprising health benefits to picking up a book before you go to sleep. We’d call this tip an all-around win.

Block out the light

Sleeping in total darkness is a great way to ensure a distraction-free bedtime experience. Make sure your space is free from all light sources as you slip away into your dream-like state. This includes night lights, natural light, and electronics.

No electronics

We know; we know… This one is so hard. We’re totally guilty of binge watching Netflix until we fall asleep… However, our computers, tv’s, phones, iPads, and the like are all major distractions when it comes down to it. It can be very hard to fall asleep when we are disturbed by the lights, vibrations and sounds coming from our various electronics. Turning these off and putting them away at a reasonable hour gives us the peace and quiet we need to focus on drifting off to sleep. No caffeine in the afternoon

If you swear by an afternoon caffeine pick-me-up, please don’t hurt us… but drinking coffee and caffeinated tea late in the day can affect the quality of your sleep. Avoiding it at least six hours before bed will help your mind and body to get tired naturally at night and make for a more sound, uninterrupted snooze session.

Hot bath with essential oils

This just screams (ok, whispers) relaxation to us! What’s better than taking a hot bath before bed, especially with calming essential oils? Fill your tub with warm water and a few drops of essential oil (we love lavender) and prepare for total bliss. The combination of the water temperature and dreamy scent puts your mind at ease in preparation for a nice, deep slumber.

Eat dinner earlier

Make sure to eat dinner at least a couple hours before you go to bed. This will ensure that your food has the proper amount of time to digest. There’s nothing more uncomfortable than going to sleep on a super full (or very empty) stomach. So, make sure you allow your body ample time to process your evening meal before bedtime. This also means avoiding a midnight rendezvous with your favorite dessert.
